'It's not about being a designer': Nicki Minaj defends her lack of formal fashion training as she launches Kmart collection


Nicki Minaj knows celebrities-turned-designers aren't always taken seriously in the fashion world, but she doesn't mind.

At an official launch event on Tuesday for her Kmart collection, the rapper said skepticism of stars lacking formal design training is 'understandable,' but she insists it's 'not about being a designer.'

The 30-year-old says her intention is simply to make clothes that she would love to wear.

She told ABC News that she 'went through a billion different ideas' with designers in a bid to create something that would 'take Kmart to another level and make girls like me, feel like we can shop here.'

The line for Kmart and shopyourway.com has Miss Minaj's personal style written all over it.

The Trinidadian-born star - who started her career as a singer and rapper - is continuing solidify her brand and expand her career.

Aside from music, she has formed part of the American Idol judging panel and even filmed a role in a film this year called The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz.
On the beauty front Miss Minaj has collaborated with MAC makeup to release a limited edition lipstick and she also has two of her own fragrances distributed by Macy's and Elizabeth Arden.
